Purpose of Media TextsDevelop your own criteria for evaluating the effectiveness of media texts in terms of communicating information, ideas, themes, issues and feelings. Make judgments about whether media texts achieve their intended purpose.
If someone is writing a script or book, making a movie or writing a song, usually there will be some meaning behind the media piece. How well the media piece communicates this information is a different matter. Songs are particularly hard to communicate information - they could either be very overt, as Lost Generation is, or implied. An example of an implied message in a song is Fall Out Boy's This Ain't A Scene, It's an Arms Race uses wartime metaphors to describe the band's new popularity, and how the society's obsession with media becomes oversaturated (x). With a first listen, it's hard to uncover these meanings. Both ways of communicating this information are effective. Overt messages get the point across right away. Lost Generation immediately shows the audience the ridiculousness of our media-obsessed society, but Fall Out Boy's track involves maybe looking up the meaning and deciphering the lyrics. IT's important for a media text to have some kind of subtext. However, if there isn't any meaning behind the song or other media piece, we are just listening to and watching empty pieces, which is not good. After successfully establishing themselves as a group who aren't afraid of telling it how it is, Rizzle Kicks have painted a rather bleak picture of today's yoof on their latest track. On paper it sounds like career suicide, but as always they pull it off with their razor-sharp lyrics and take-it-or-leave-it attitude. Grouping the AudienceResearch various schemes for grouping people into segments based on age, sex, income, place of residence etc. Which segmenting techniques best describe the media texts you have selected? How does this reflect on you?
There are various schemes for grouping audiences. Grouping an audience is commonly known as demographics. An example of demographics is grouping an audience based on income. This can be represented by letters. (x) Another example of a demographic may be age. This is very common when finding ratings for television shows. For example, the primary audience demographics for The Vampire Diaries are 12-17 year olds and 18-24 year olds.(x) However, the primary audience demographic for popular television show The Walking Dead achieved number one in demographics 18-49. (x)
There are many ways to group the audience. Music generally tends to group the audience by sex (M/F) and age. (x) The primary demographic for rap music in general is variable, but generally it is of the younger age group. . 'The global hip hop community: twenty four million people between the ages of 19-34, from a range of nationalities, ethnic groups and religions. Their collective spending power is $500 billion annually in the U.S. alone.' (x) I myself am not a rap music listener in general. However, I enjoy Rizzle Kicks because their music is a bit different to typical USA rap music that dominates here in Canada. They are singing/rapping about a relevant cause. The intended audience for this piece is the current generation that is obsessed with reality television and celebrities, the generation that abuses #hashtags and documents our every move on Instagram or Facebook, which includes myself and my age group. The song points out a lot of flaws within our generation and their intended audience, which could have been a tricky move, but it works, and I appreciate the song for doing so. Rizzle Kicks are from Brighton, so the people of the city may be a potent influence in their songs.
Form and Content in the Media Identify characteristics of a variety of media forms (film, TV, iTunes, games) and explain how they shape content and create meaning. What media forms do you gravitate toward? Why?
Different media forms have different characteristics. It is a well known fact that there is a definite link between form and content. A song in mainstream media is typically 3-4 minutes long. Communicating an idea is not easy for that time period, therefore songwriters have to be very efficient in conveying their meaning in the selected time period. Television, however, has been called the medium in which to communicate mass messages. However, a rival of this is the Internet. With mediums such as Twitter and Facebook allowing us to immediately access information, someone could post something and within 15 minutes the whole world could know about it. (x) In film, content and form varies. Let's take two examples: Shrek and Titanic. They are two very different movies in their form. One is an animated family movie and one is a disaster movie. However, they are both at their core, a love story. (x) Personal Preference of Media Forms There are a variety of media forms that I gravitate towards, being a part of the 'computer generation.' However, I would choose either a song or television as the primary medium that I like. Songs are short and pack a lot of meaning into their three or four minutes. They can evoke emotions within me just by playing a few chords. On the other hand, I also like television shows, ironically, for the opposite reason. Television shows can last for a long time and I can watch these characters' journeys for a longer time. Television characters can become part of you, especially if the show has been going on for a long time, and when the show ends, it's like losing friends. |
